Today, wildfires are bigger, burning longer, causing more damage, and impacting public health more than ever before due to prolonged smoke exposure. Wildfires can quickly turn into a disaster when they enter the wildland urban interface (WUI), where structures and other human development meet or intermix with undeveloped wildland or vegetation fuel.
This course provides an overview of how wildfires are changing and the role of the WUI, with a particular focus on how fuel in the WUI differs from wildland fuels, the impacts of WUI emissions on human health, and mitigation opportunities to safeguard WUI communities.
